OK – So I was thinking about
my little gripe session in this morning’s post, specifically about the fact that we had not held a single
Soultuary service yet. As I was thinking about that and that we hadn’t been to
church today, because of Patti’s back being out, I decided that there was no time like the present!
The church we were at in New York,
Vineyard Christian Fellowship – Fishkill, was started by
Pastor Louie and Patti Federico and their two sons in their home and for a while, it was just their family meeting in the living room. With them as an inspiration, I prepared a lesson, called the family together and we “had church”.
I started out by gathering everyone together while
Day of Fire’s
Rain Song played in the background. I spoke briefly about how
it says in Matthew that it rains on both the just and the unjust. So, if things are going well or things are falling apart, it’s not necessarily indicative of our standing with God. And that we need to keep doing what He requires of us, regardless of if we find it difficult or not.
We then spent some time in prayer. Our three year old, Reagan, actually kicked it off with a prayer of thanksgiving.
We then sang “
Open The Eyes of My Heart” as an invitation to God that we want to see Him high and lifted up. (Oh how I can’t wait for the day when we actually have musicians…)
I then talked briefly about how we all make mistakes. None of us are perfect. In fact, the kids and I had a tough day with Patti being out of commission. I think we all had gotten on each other’s nerves a bit. I asked if any of us ever get on God’s nerves. We all agreed that we do and that when it happens, it’s called
SIN.
We then sang a
Justin McRoberts song, Galatians 2:20, off 1999’s “
Reason for Living”.
After that, we had a brief time of reflection and then I read the scripture I had picked for the evening,
Ephesians 2:1-1. I then used a
devotional “The Struggle of the Flesh” as the starting point for my “message”. After reading and talking though the devotional, I interviewed Patti a little bit and just spoke from my heart about how we need to be “others oriented” and allow God’s grace to reign in us.
We then closed in a time of prayer.
It was kind of short, it was just our family and we had to stop and put Reagan to bed in the middle of it, but it was great to actually have a service start in our home. We are moving forward with what we feel God is calling us to. Why wait? Why not now?!
